Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka has urged Arsenal to keep up their title challenge, after watching Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City push the Gunners to the top of the table.
The Switzerland midfielder has been quoted by Kicker as he continues to enjoy life at Leverkusen, while seemingly keeping an eye on his former club.
Arsenal sit top of the Premier League table after the weekend’s action, with their win over Brentford taking them to 64 points from 28 games.
That puts them level on points with Liverpool in second but a point ahead of Manchester City after those two sides drew on Sunday, with the Gunners superior goal difference pushing them up to first.
They’re firmly in the title race again this season, having seemingly learned from their bitter experience last season when they battled with Manchester City until a late season collapse saw Pep Guardiola’s side go on to win the title again.
This year’s race is a much closer contest and Xhaka, who left Arsenal for Leverkusen in the summer, is keeping a close eye on matters even as he leads the German side towards the Bundesliga title.
“Sure. Of course we saw Liverpool’s result against City. Of course, you’re happy for that former club where you had seven wonderful years,” he said.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t make it last year, hopefully it will work this time. They’re doing a great job, winning eight out of eight games recently. Keep it up!”
