With Martin Odegaard captaining Arsenal in a season where they should lift the Premier League title, he could fulfil a big chunk of the expectations that have always been around him.
The Norwegian midfielder was a phenomenon back in his home country when he was signed by Real Madrid in 2015, at a time where most football fans had already heard about him.
With Odegaard now playing for the national team in this international break, local outlet TV2 features a story about the players who had been at his side when he was first showing his skills at Stromsgodset.
The story is a collection of quotes from many of his former teammates who say how impressive he had been long before he joined Arsenal.
“What I remember best about Martin was actually his first training session with the first team. After training, I and the rest of the guys sat in the changing room with a special feeling. We looked at each other and thought ‘what just happened?’. We were all a bit in shock,” said Tokmac Nguyen.
Thomas Sorum, who also played with Odegaard, also talked about his first steps.
“He had a very special understanding of space that was unique for his age. During his first year at Godset, he had a completely wild development.”
Odegaard has 35 appearances for Arsenal this season, with ten goals and seven assists, and is undoubtedly one of the reasons Mikel Arteta’s side has been having such an impressive campaign.
With the Gunners now out of all cup competitions, they can solely focus on the Premier League, where they are back in action on the 1st of April to face Leeds United.
