Tyler Morton has thanked Jurgen Klopp for believing in him during their time at Liverpool.
The 22-year-old left Liverpool for Lyon for a reported €15m in the summer. He’s had a chat with Le Progres to discuss topics including his time at Anfield.
Morton came through the ranks of the club’s youth system. He made his way into their first team in 2021 when the former Borussia Dortmund manager was in charge at Liverpool.
The defensive midfielder played 14 games for the Reds and nine of those games came under Klopp’s orders.
Liverpool allowed him to go out on loan to Blackburn Rovers and Hull City between 2022 and 2024. Upon his return to Liverpool in the summer of 2024, the German coach was replaced by Arne Slot.
Morton was limited to 261 minutes from five games under the Dutchman and believes he should have played more under Slot.
He mentioned this when the newspaper asked whether Klopp and the ex-Feyenoord manager were important in his career.
“Yes, without a doubt. Jurgen Klopp was the best coach for my development. I think at that moment, I was ready to play. I’m not saying that no one believed it, but I think I was ready, and Klopp thought so too. He gave me the opportunity to play on the biggest stage for a very big club. He believed in me, allowed me to go out on loan, to develop,” he said.
“With Arne Slot, I didn’t play as much as I wanted, even though I was ready. It was his decision, and I took it calmly, but I had to find another path. He was very open and very honest with me at the end of last season.
“We talked a lot, and he let me join OL [Lyon]. It was the best decision. I will be eternally grateful to Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot, in different ways. They are excellent managers, but also great men.”
“Jurgen just wanted the best for me, he made me play great games in the Champions League and the Premier League. It was a great time, he helped me improve at every level.”
