Earlier in his career, Julian Weigl was seen as one of a handful of players who could be the future of German football. He was linked to nearly all the big Premier League clubs, as well as the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, but he wasn’t able to fulfil his potential.

There were some injury issues, although it’s also quite possible the media around Borussia Dortmund hyped the player to a level he wasn’t at, hoping to cash in from a Premier League club.

Weigl ultimately moved to Benfica in 2019, and returned to Germany with Borussia Monchengladbach in 2022. There he worked with Daniel Farke and that’s likely a big reason he’s now being linked with a move to Leeds United.

This week’s edition of SportBild goes over Borussia Monchengladbach news, and when it comes to Weigl it’s said he’s close to Farke and could therefore go to Leeds United in the summer.

There’s no claims relating to transfer fee or anything like that for the 29-year-old. He has a contract lasting until June 2028 and a €6m Transfermarkt valuation.

A defensive midfielder, Weigl has played 22 club matches so far this season.

One for Leeds United to keep an eye on.
