Former West Ham United boss Julen Lopetegui could be set to join Qatar as their new national team manager.
That’s according to AS, who report that the former West Ham boss has a proposal on the table from Qatar and there is a sense he would accept it.
Lopetegui has been out of work since being sacked at the beginning of January after less than eight months in charge at the London Stadium.
Reports since then have indicated that he was waiting for a third opportunity in the Premier League, after his spell at West Ham and Wolverhampton Wanderers before that.
However, AS now report that there is a chance he could abandon that to take up the manager’s position with Qatar instead.
They explain that the Basque technician has an offer to take over the reigns of the Qatari team, who are still in the fight to make it to the World Cup.
The newspaper reports that Lopetegui is ‘close to being named’ as their new manager, and it considered ‘more than possible’ that he will take up the offer.
The Spanish coach is being eyed thanks to his experience in European football and the ‘good work’ he’s done with young players, something that Qatar consider fundamental to their growth plans.
Thus, they’ve targeted him and there is every chance he will now accept and make a relatively quick return to football following his West Ham departure in January.
