Tottenham’s pursuit of Antonio Vergara has taken an unexpected turn.
Fresh claims from Italy state Napoli have already rejected a €25m (£21.6m) offer. Now they are working to secure the winger’s long-term future instead.
That would represent a significant shift from the picture painted over recent weeks. During that time, multiple reports in Italy suggested Napoli were prepared to listen to offers of around €25m-30m (£21.6m-25.9m) for the 23-year-old.
According to local journalist Fabio Cannavo, speaking on Radio Marte, as relayed by Calcio Napoli 24, Tottenham submitted a €25m bid which Napoli turned down. He added that the Serie A side are now pushing to extend Vergara’s contract until 2032.
Cannavo also claimed the player’s salary would increase dramatically as part of the new deal. It would rise from around €300,000 per year to €2m net annually.
Napoli’s stance appears to have changed
The latest claims contrast sharply with previous reports we covered.
Italian outlets had repeatedly suggested Napoli viewed this summer as a potential opportunity to cash in on Vergara after his breakthrough campaign, with Tottenham, Como and Roma all linked with interest.
His agent, Mario Giuffredi, had also made it clear that any decision over his future would rest entirely with Napoli.
If Cannavo’s information proves accurate, the club’s position has changed considerably in a short space of time.
Vergara broke into Napoli’s first team during Antonio Conte’s injury-hit campaign and made an immediate impression. He finished the season with 19 appearances in all competitions. He scored three goals and provided four assists. Additionally, he had a memorable Champions League strike against Chelsea before injury disrupted his momentum.
Blow for Tottenham?
Tottenham’s interest in Vergara has been a recurring theme since January, when reports in Italy first suggested Spurs had tried to sign him before Napoli decided against a sale midway through the season.
The latest update indicates that, rather than negotiating over a transfer fee, Napoli are now trying to reward the winger with a new long-term contract.
Whether those talks are completed or simply strengthen Napoli’s negotiating position remains to be seen, but the latest report suggests Tottenham’s chances of landing Vergara have become significantly more complicated than they appeared only a few weeks ago.
