Boca Juniors youngster Ezequiel Fernández could end up at Manchester City in the near future, with the City Group looking into signing him for Girona.
That’s according to journalist Jonathan Riniti in El Crack Deportivo, who says there’s every chance the player could end up at the Etihad in future.
The website reports that Boca president Juan Román Riquelme and manager Diego Martínez are working hard on the transfer market for Boca, reshaping the squad after losing Valentín Barco to Brighton.
He may not be the only player leaving this month as several of Boca’s current squad are highly sought-after and Fernández is one of them.
He is currently wanted by Girona in Spain, with them keen to strengthen their squad if they can and continue their unexpected title challenge in La Liga.
The Spanish side are part of the City Group network of football clubs, headed up by Manchester City, and according to Riniti, that means the prospect of Fernández being moved on is very much on the cards.
“The jewel of Boca that Girona wants is Equi Fernández,” he is quoted as saying.
“They have been following him for some time and are analyzing presenting an offer to Juan Román Riquelme. The City Group would buy him for the team Spanish but if he’s doing well, I don’t rule out that he ends up at Manchester City.
“Does he go with Valentín Barco or stay like Cristian Medina and Nicolás Valentini?”
El Crack Deportivo then add after Barco’s departure, Boca aren’t keen on letting other players go on the cheap and so ‘remain firm’ in asking for $15m for Fernández, while also pushing to get his release clause increased to $20m.
Whether that’s too much for Girona remains to be seen but the interest is there, as well as the prospect of him joining Manchester City in future if the potential moved worked out well.
