Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen could be a “very good option” for Ajax as they look for a left-back in the January transfer window.
That’s according to De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij, who believes the full back should be on the list of options being looked at.
The Dutch side are expected to be busy in January after a disastrous few months for the club following what is now being perceived as a ruinous summer transfer window for them.
They currently have two left backs in the squad in Borna Sosa and Gastón Ávila, but neither of them are believed to be good enough and the Amsterdam team will look at other options in the winter window.
That could put Maatsen on the list of options, with it widely believed that he could be among those that Chelsea look to move on as they need to reduce their squad and secure sales to help balance the books after their financial outlay over the last year.
The defender has barely featured for Chelsea since returning from a loan spell at Burnley in the summer and all indications he is not a part of the club’s or Mauricio Pochettino’s plans moving forwards.
Verweij certainly believes he should be a player that the Dutch club look at as he’d be a ‘very good option’ for them.
“Nine out of the ten Chelsea players that you now get from Chelsea have only sat on the bench,” he said.
“I think Chelsea has forty players around and you can only field eleven. So, they haven’t played football for a long time.
“Ajax has Berghuis, so why would they get him?” he added when a potential move for Noni Madueke was suggested, before stating “I would consider that a very good option” on the subject of Maatsen.
