On Tuesday, we relayed a story in Il Mattino stating that Jorginho’s transfer to Manchester City was edging ever closer, with talks once again taking place between the Premier League champions and Napoli.
The Serie A side want €55m up front for the Italy international, while Pep Guardiola’s side are just short of that, with bonuses included, so there’s a small but very important amount to squabble over.
Fast forward to Wednesday, and everyone is still waiting, including Jorginho’s agent, Joao Santos, who provided an update to Radio Kiss Kiss, relayed by CalcioNapoli24.
He said: “We’re waiting for news. The two clubs are talking. Jorginho is in Brazil and he’s waiting to find out what his future holds. We’ve got a verbal agreement with Manchester City, and we’re waiting for Napoli to agree with them.
“With a club like City, the names of those they’re interested in always leak, but if you can’t reach an agreement between clubs, there’s no point moving forward. Everything is in the hands of Aurelio de Laurentiis and Manchester City’s president. I can’t give you a date for when the talks will be complete. The only certainty is that Jorginho will play in a blue shirt next year.”
That last line makes one thing very clear: if the deal taking the Brazilian to the Etihad falls through, he’ll be staying at Napoli with Carlo Ancelotti rather than look for a move elsewhere.
Santos recently explained that should the move not take place, Jorginho would happily continue with his current side, even if he’d be slightly annoyed at missing out on a move to a club like Manchester City.
