Two days ago, Middlesbrough confirmed they’d parted ways with manager Michael Carrick and two of his assistants, Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick.
The Championship club finished 10th with 64 points in the recently concluded season, four points behind sixth placed Bristol City, who finished sixth and made it to the playoffs.
Middlesbrough will now look to appoint a new manager for next season and are searching for Carrick’s successor. On Thursday, claims from the UK stated Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson is in the running for the vacant job at Boro.
Sweden face Hungary in a friendly later today and in the pre-match press conference, Jon Dahl Tomasson was asked about the Middlesbrough links, and Fotbollskanalen relayed his comments.
The 48-year-old has the experience of managing in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers between July 2022 and February 2024. When asked about the latest claims, the Sweden manager refuse to close the door on Middlesbrough.
“There are always rumours about things in football. I have a contract with SvFF [Swedish FA]. I am very happy to be here. But my contract is not important,” he said.
That contract lasts until 2026 and when asked whether he could leave before it expires, Jon Dahl Tomasson explained: “I don’t know, to be honest. Whether it is possible to leave or not. It is not important. I enjoy being here.
“You can never guarantee anything in football. There are many rumours in this industry. Rumores are rumours.”
The local journalists pressed the national team manager over why he wouldn’t commit his future to Sweden.
“I’m very happy here. I have said it several times. I enjoy being here. I have a great relationship with the association, and they are very happy with our performance so far. Rumours are rumours. It’s part of the game,” he added.
The Swedish journalists present continued to press, given the manager wouldn’t rule out Middlesbrough. When asked if Boro is an attractive job for him, he said: “For me? To be honest, we’ve spent a lot of time on this now. We’re playing a match tomorrow. I’m here with the team. Haven’t we spent enough time on a question like this? I think so.”
