Diego León says he was initially ‘afraid’ of joining Manchester United, but believes the move was destiny.
The 18-year-old came through the ranks of Cerro Porteño’s youth system and made his way into their first team in 2024.
At the start of this year, multiple claims from Paraguay reported Manchester United as the left-back’s next destination. He had to wait until July to secure a move to Old Trafford.
León has been speaking to Paraguay’s 1080 AM about his growth so far, and Versus have relayed his comments.
The transfer to Manchester United saw the left-back leave South American and move to Europe for the first time in his career.
León has been honest in admitting that he was nervous about joining the Red Devils, but that’s no longer the case.
“When they told me about coming to England, I was afraid. The language and other things, but luckily, I’ve adapted now,” he said.
The young talent made his first team debut for Cerro Porteño in August 2024 and played 33 matches for them.
He’s yet to make his debut for Ruben Amorim’s side and has played two matches for Manchester United U21s. That didn’t stop the South American from making his senior debut for Paraguay earlier this month.
On his rise, León explained: “I was so happy to be called up to the national team. It’s hard to grasp everything that’s happened to me in these two years.”
Suggesting the past year has been something of a shock, he said: “I only wanted to play for the Cerro’s reserves, but God had better plans for me.”
