A week ago we covered a claim from Mundo Deportivo that Liverpool are interested in Jasper Cillessen.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were one of three mentioned in line with the Dutchman goalkeeper, with Napoli and Atletico Madrid joining them.
Monday’s edition of the same newspaper again brings Liverpool into the hunt for Cillessen, along with the Italian and Spanish competition.
This insistence that Liverpool and others are keen is helping the story to rumble on, and the Catalan newspaper clearly like it.
Interestingly, another Catalan newspaper, Sport, on Monday runs claims that Cillessen actually has offers to leave Barcelona. No clubs are mentioned, but Sport state offers have been pushed forward and there’s opportunities for the player to leave.
Part of that praise seems to be the claim that other big clubs want to sign him. Like it’s the Catalan sport media equivalent of buying flowers: Hey, you’re doing great bud, but not in the team much, here’s a rumour some big clubs are interested in you.
Unsusrpingly, Cillessen is once again stated as being happy, both on and off the pitch, and isn’t pushing for a move.
Liverpool? They may just be a prop in the story due to the European assumption they need a new club goalkeeper. Time, and perhaps Loris Karius’ form, will tell. What is certain is there’s no point Cillessen swapping Barca for Liverpool unless he’s pretty much guaranteed to be number one.
Is Cillessen better than Karius? Probably. Is he better enough for Klopp to be swerved from his plan to make the German Liverpool’s long term goalkeeper? Maybe not.
