Last week, AS reported Carlo Ancelotti would welcome Raphaël Varane’s return to Real Madrid in the winter market.
Éder Militão and David Alaba’s serious injuries have left the manager short of options in the centre-back position and this has seen the La Liga side look for reinforcements in the same position next month.
Sport state the Manchester United star is the ‘preferred one’ for Los Blancos as he knows the club and city very well.
The 30-year-old spent a decade at Real Madrid before joining the Red Devils in 2021. He has been in and out of Erik ten Hag’s starting lineup and has been restricted to six league starts this season.
He isn’t pleased with this and has reportedly made it clear the situation cannot continue.
Varane’s situation at Manchester United may suit the Spanish club but Sport have warned them that Bayern Munich are also thinking about him.
Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund has admitted his side are short at the back and could look for solutions in January. They have identified Varane as one of the targets.
Sport say the Bundesliga winners ‘would be in a position’ to table a €20m bid and for this figure, Manchester United would open the door for his sale.
This is a problem for Real Madrid and even if Bayern don’t end up signing Varane, their interest in him would ‘raise the price’ for Los Blancos.
