Fulham defender Joachim Andersen has admitted he still hasn’t forgiven referee Michael Oliver for awarding a handball against him against Germany at Euro 2024, and probably never will.
The centre-back has been speaking to Ekstra Bladet about Oliver and how he’s unlikely to ever get over his performance in that big game.
Andersen was one of the key players in Germany’s win over Denmark in the last 16 of the tournament.
He first had a goal disallowed before then coming into focus again at the other end when Oliver judged him to have handballed inside his own box.
The penalty decision was one of the most contentious calls of the whole tournament, with the Fulham man and his teammates publicly aggrieved by the decision after the eventual 2-0 defeat.
They were joined by fans and pundits alike, who also questioned the decision from Oliver and believed the Fulham man had been harshly treated.
It seems that’s an opinion he shares and is yet to let go of, admitting he probably won’t ever be able to forgive Oliver for his performance in that game.
After the match he’d said: “It is one of the worst refereeing performances I have seen in my career. Offside is offside, but that you can rule on the ball in such a situation is absolutely crazy.”
Asked how he feels now, the Fulham player replied: “I have not forgiven him, and I won’t.”
Euro 2024 isn’t all bad memories though, and the defender has taken a lot from with, with he and his teammates still trying to learn lessons: “We watched some video on Monday and looked at what we could do better. See what we could take with us from the EC.
“As has also been talked about, the defensive foundation has looked good. We don’t allow many chances against and are well on the pitch.
“But we need just a little bit in the last third to create the last big chance. Maybe there is a little bit of insanity missing.”
