Aston Villa star Emi Buendía has admitted it’s remains a dream to get into the Argentina squad for the World Cup next summer.

El Intransigente cover comments from the Aston Villa midfielder today following his winning strike in the 2-1 win over Arsenal.

Aston Villa were winners over Mikel Arteta’s side in Saturday’s early kick off, with a late goal from Buendía, with virtually the last kick of the game, sealing all three points.

It was another major moment for the Argentine, who has returned to Villa Park this season with a bang. He was not a part of their plans last season and spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Bayer Leverkusen.

All indications were that he would be sold in the summer. instead, the failure to bring Marco Asensio back from PSG opened the door for a second opportunity.

He’s taken that with both hands. His winning goal against Arsenal took him to five goals and two assists in 19 games this season.

That’s put him in contention for a place in Argentina’s squad heading to the World Cup next year. He returned to the international set up in the last international break. He had not added to his tally since his debut in 2022 before that.

Bagging goals like the winner against Arsenal will only help his cause. He certainly admits it’s a dream for him.

“Of course. It’s a dream I’ve had since I was a kid,” he said.

“Representing my country, in Argentina, is always the greatest thing that can happen to me. I work every day for it. But first I have to do things well here at the club and the opportunities will come. I’ll work for it and we’ll see in seven months.”
