After a few months being linked, albeit weakly, to Tottenham Hotspur, Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez has opened up about the transfer rumours.

The 21-year-old was interviewed by Spanish outlet AS this week, and didn’t try to avoid the subject when asked about Tottenham’s interest in him.

“I try to watch a lot of football and learn from the big,” Lopez told AS. “We are here for that. The truth is that the English league is very nice. It is stronger, more powerful. It’d be good to go there.”

AS writes that despite being one of Celta Vigo’s best players, Gomez has one of the worst salaries in the squad, currently making around €400k per season.

He was questioned if his club have already called him to renew his contract, but apparently they’re not too concerned about it: “Celta didn’t say anything to me. I’m calm, doing things well to keep improving day by day.”

Gomez has 14 goals and three assists in 30 games for Celta de Vigo this season.

Even though his contract is not the best, he has a €50m release clause in a deal which runs until 2022, so it shouldn’t be easy to take him either.

That’s the kind of player contract Tottenham would love.
