Now that Steve Bruce has been dismissed at St James’ Park, Newcastle United can well and truly start afresh.

The new ownership will bring in a new manager sooner rather than later, with multiple outlets in England suggesting former AS Roma manager Paulo Fonseca is the favourite and already in talks for the role.

This has, to no one’s surprise, filtered through to Italy, where some websites are already trying to work out who the Portuguese manager could sign in January.

ForzaRoma.info have a list of three players, all rather believable and attainable, and those are Chris Smalling, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Amadou Diawara.

The Armenian would, much like the former Manchester United centre-back, immediately bring more Premier League experience to the Newcastle squad, having spent a few years at Old Trafford.

However, he is a regular under José Mourinho and convincing him to swap his current situation for a move to the club currently 19th in the Premier League could be more difficult than the other two.

Smalling, down his end, is being plagued by injuries, but would certainly be a good acquisition for a club currently trying to turn their season around and avoid relegation.

As for Amadou Diawara, it’s pointed out that he isn’t ‘considered a valid alternative by Mourinho’, but it must not be forgotten that he seemingly repeatedly turned down the chance to move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer, wanting to try his luck once more in Rome.

Now that has failed, perhaps the lure of a bit more cash and a potentially exciting project on Tyneside might entice him more?
