Matteo Darmian regained his place in the Manchester United starting XI following the injury to Antonio Valencia, and then kept it to thanks to Luke Shaw’s current situation.

The 26-year-old made his third league start of the season against Arsenal on Saturday, but reports in Italy continue to link him with a return to the Serie A.

According to Il Mattino, Napoli are keen on signing Darmian in January as Faouzi Ghoulam is set to depart for the African Cup of Nations.

Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri wants to sign a fullback, who can play on the either side of the defence, and Darmian can fit these requirements perfectly.

Darmian has also been linked with a move to Inter Milan but it remains to be seen if Manchester United would consider selling the defender in January. The Italian international might not be a part of Jose Mourinho’s long term plans, but Manchester United would surely like to sign a replacement first, before selling him.

A couple of week ago, a Darmian exit looked very likely indeed, but there’s no way Mourinho is going to leave himself short, and he seems to admire the Italian’s way of just getting on with things.

Mourinho’s decision to show faith in Darmian has changed everything, he was picked ahead of Daley Blind for the left back position on Saturday, and with Mourinho making it clear he sees Blind as a fullback, that’s quite some backing for Darmian.
