Following his gallbladder surgery, there has been a lot of talk of Tottenham’s Antonio Conte potentially leaving the club.
This was already a story before his illness, but it appears the talk of him leaving Spurs has intensified of late, and the exit in the Champions League to Milan has done nothing but reinforce it.
In fact, there are some in Italy, like Corriere della Sera, who say there is now a ‘definite farewell’ from Tottenham for the Italian manager.
This will make it ‘another season without trophies’ for the manager, who has been renowned over the years for lifting them wherever his goes.
They add that ‘surely he will leave London’ now that his last chance of silverware has evaporated, and his ‘marriage to Tottenham has come to an end’.
Conte has ‘nostalgia for Italy’, where he would find his family, wife and daughter, whom he left in Turin to take the Tottenham job.
Not only that, but he is ‘not even satisfied with his relationship with the club’, meaning there is little reason for him to stay beyond the current campaign, if he even lasts that long, as he joked after the Milan game.
It’s made clear the ‘harmony between Conte and Tottenham’ is now at an ‘all-time low’, especially since he wants guarantees in the growth of the club, despite it not being easy to compete with some of the richest clubs in the world in the same league.
This, they say, ‘will lead to divorce’, and his future ‘is a black hole’ and a ‘mystery that would fascinate even the best crime writers’.
A return to Italy would make sense, and with a few clubs in his home country needing new managers sooner or later, like Juventus and Inter, while Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid could also end up needing a new man at the helm in the near future.
