Graham Potter is openly touting himself for the Sweden job, as he eyes his next role after West Ham United.

That’s according to Fotboll Skanalen, who have a quick interview with the former West Ham boss today. It comes just hours after Jon Dahl Tomasson was sacked by Sweden earlier today.

The pressure had increased on Tomasson after a 1-0 loss to Kosovo in World Cup qualifying on Monday. That left Sweden bottom of Group B in World Cup qualifying.

They’re now on the hunt for a new manager to try and rescue their World Cup dreams. They need six points from their last two games, and results to go their way, to make it into play-off stages.

Now it appears that Potter is positioning himself for the role. He’s a free agent after being sacked by West Ham. Crucially, he also has a history of managing in Sweden with Östersunds.

Graham Potter ideal role

“I just heard the news (about Dahl Tomasson). It’s sad, of course. For Swedish football and JDT,” he said.

“But yes. I’m actually in Sweden right now, in my house in Sweden. I’m between jobs and just left the Premier League. I’m open to anything, really, where I feel I can help. The job as the national team captain of the Swedish national team is fantastic.

“I have feelings for Sweden. I love the country, and I love Swedish football. I have a lot to be grateful for towards Swedish football. So yes, it would be a fantastic opportunity for me. Of course.”

The crucial part for Potter is that he finds a job he’s excited about after his miserable spell at West Ham ended last month. Whether that is the Sweden job, is up for debate, and he’s remaining coy on that front.

“I’m in a situation where the next thing I take on should be something that I really believe in,” he said.

“I should feel that I can help and that I have support. I’m open to anything. I’ve gathered a lot of experience so far and I’m very grateful for the career I’ve had so far.”
