Matthijs de Ligt has expressed his delight after Manchester United secured a 2-1 win over at Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Algemeen Dagblad have relayed comments made by the centre-back, who played the full 90 minutes against the Reds.

The Netherlands international joined Manchester United in July 2024 and the club went through a difficult period last season. They finished 15th in the table and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United are currently ninth in the table, trailing third placed Liverpool by two points and three behind second placed Manchester City.

De Ligt now admits his debut season at Old Trafford was difficult but insists things have improved this season.

“Last season was a difficult period for everyone,” he said.

“This year is going a lot better. At times we played football very well, but it always fell the wrong way. We created opportunities but did not complete them. That’s why we lost. Now it finally works.

“But we knew that we reached a very nice level in the top matches. Against Arsenal, Chelsea and now Liverpool (2-1). Only against Manchester City (0-3) things went completely wrong.”

Arne Slot aimed at a dig at Ruben Amorim for using long balls. After yesterday’s defeat, the Liverpool manager again labelled Manchester United a “long-ball team”.

The 26-year-old has given his take on the tactics employed by the Manchester United boss.

“An excellent plan, if you win,” he said.

The victory over Liverpool saw Amorim register his first back-to-back wins in the league. The Dutchman remains hopeful Manchester United can continue their good run.

“Things are going in the right direction. We were already able to make things difficult for top opponents. Now we’re even winning. The statistics already indicated it. We want to continue this,” he added.
