As you might have heard in the bits and bobs that have surfaced since the end of the January transfer window, Lyon wanted to sign Alexandre Lacazette.
The Arsenal striker’s contract at the Emirates is up at the end of the season, and while there is still a chance he stays with the Gunners, there’s also a very big one he leaves on a free.
Lyon, where he was initially bought from, had already brought back Tanguy Ndombélé on loan from Tottenham and reportedly tried to repatriate the striker as well.
Their efforts were in vain, however, but this interest from the Ligue 1 side has since been confirmed by both the club’s president, Jean-Michel Aulas, and one of their directors, Vincent Ponsot, during the press conference to present the Spurs midfielder.
The latter said, relayed by RMC Sport: “It’s Lacazette. We’re interested in him because he left a mark on this club. It’s a profile that interests us and we’ve always been in touch with him”.
As for Aulas, he added: “It’s part of the basic ideas brought by Bruno Cheyrou. In our context, yes, it’s a bit more accessible than Benzema. We’ll have to see if we can do it as a free transfer, but we won’t be the only ones”.
That’s two important confirmations that Lyon are in fact after the Arsenal striker, and it will now be up to Mikel Arteta and the rest of the London club to see if they can prevent this from happening.
