Calvin Bassey has been edging towards a move from Rangers to Ajax, as the Dutch club look for a replacement for Lisandro Martinez.

The Argentine flew to England on Friday evening to sign for Manchester United, and Bassey is thought to be first choice to replace him. However, Saturday’s edition of Dutch newspaper AD states Ajax won’t go as high as the €25m it’s stated Rangers are asking for.

They’ll go further into negotiations with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side, and they hope to reach an agreement with Rangers, but if that can’t be done for less than €25m then AD say the Eredivisie side will switch their attention to different targets for defence.

Ajax themselves have pushed the transfer fee for Martinez as high as €55m, so Rangers may feel they can continue asking for a high price, and if Bassey doesn’t move to Amsterdam then there’s likely to be other interest in the short to medium term.

Tottenham Hotspur also managed to get what they wanted from Ajax for Steven Bergwijn, giving further strength to Rangers’ stance.
