Bayer Leverkusen’s Sporting Managing Director Simon Rolfes has insisted they are in no rush to sell rising star Florian Wirtz and he is likewise not keen to leave, despite renewed interest from Manchester City.
The German director has been speaking to SportBILD regarding various topics at Leverkusen, which naturally meant a conversation about Wirtz.
He has been back to his best for Bayer Leverkusen this season after an injury hit couple of years, with one goal and two assists in five games in the Bundesliga already and a goal and an assist in one game in the Europa League as well.
It appears as if he is in for a superb campaign and on course to reestablish himself as one of the rising stars of European football once again.
His early season form has not gone unnoticed and a report from Germany this week indicated Manchester City were once again keeping an eye on his development.
That is likely to have sparked some concern among the Leverkusen fanbase, who will know that Manchester City have the funds to pluck Wirtz from them, much the same as Chelsea took Kai Havertz in 2020.
Rolfes, though, isn’t too concerned about the situation at this moment in time and has insisted the player is absolutely fine where he is.
“Success always increases the chance that players will feel comfortable and want to stay longer,” he said.
“What Florian and his family do excellently: They are completely relaxed about the topic and focused on development.
“He has a wonderful environment here with family, friends and club. As a player and as a personality, he can grow at Bayer 04.”
