Newcastle United will not need to spend €40m if they wish to sign Marc Pubill from UD Almería this summer, even if that is the value of his release clause.
That’s according to Diario de Almería, who report that the Spanish side will negotiate for lower than that figure if any club comes for the defender.
A report yesterday indicated that Newcastle were keen on Pubill, with them seemingly seeking out a long-term replacement for Kieran Trippier at right-back.
The 21-year-old was named as a potential option, although could prove to be an expensive target as he has a €40m release clause in his current contract.
That report did make it clear that it was unlikely Newcastle would have to pay such a figure for the defender, but Diario de Almería have doubled down on that just to make sure.
They cover Newcastle’s apparent interest and how Pubill appears to be gaining suitors this summer and then mention the €40m release clause in his contract.
According to them, though, that’s just a figure and the Vega de Acá entity ‘will negotiate his transfer’ for a fee that is more in line with his performances and current level.
The newspaper puts no figure on the table but do say Pubill has a profile that ‘fits perfectly’ with what is expected from the modern full-back so it’s likely Almería will be echoing those sentiments if any talks are opened in the near future.
The positive is that it seems Newcastle absolutely don’t need to spend as much as €40m if they do want him, with Almería open to discussions for a transfer below that sum. Whether that encourages the Magpies to move now, remains to be seen.
