Manchester United signed André Onana from Inter Milan in July, after David De Gea left Old Trafford as a free agent.

The Serie A side’s decision to cash in from his sale wasn’t well received by a section of Inter fans and also the Italian media. There were reports Onana’s exit would be a serious loss for the Nerazzurri, after he kept 19 clean sheets and conceded 36 goals from 41 games last season.

That no longer seems to be the case, at least with the Italian press, partly because of his poor start to his Manchester United career. He has conceded 14 goals from six games, keeping one clean sheet in the process.

Journalist Stefano De Grandis has told Sky Italia, relayed by Inter-News, that Manchester United overpaid to sign the 27-year-old.

“Sommer is a bargain. In my opinion, in the end it’s worth it for Inter. Firstly because Onana is physically good and had a good season but he’s not world class. Secondly because Inter earned more for Onana than he’s worth,” De Grandis said.

Having arrived at the San Siro as a free agent in 2022, Onana was sold to Erik ten Hag’s side for €55m.

Calciomercato have joined De Grandis in hailing the Italian club’s decision to sell the stopper.

They say both Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta and their sporting director, Piero Ausilio, have produced a ‘masterpiece’ with the former Ajax man’s sale, and suggest he wasn’t worth €55m in the summer and isn’t worth that today.

Manchester United have only managed two wins this season and have lost their last three games. The website claims the pressure at Old Trafford has ‘grown exponentially in recent years’.

When focusing on Onana’s displays, they defend him by stating that he’s ‘not the only problem’ at the Premier League side that ‘had deluded last season that it had overcome its limits and its idiosyncrasy lent itself to the ups and downs that have characterised the last decade’.

Despite investing big in the last few years, it’s claimed Manchester United are a ‘poorly constructed team’. The outlet partly blames the Red Devils failure to strengthen their defence in the last window for their poor start to this season.

Onana can easily turn things around at Manchester United but Inter’s decision to sell him is now celebrated by some in Italy, which wasn’t the exactly the case back in July.
