Feyenoord will end up regretting that Santiago Giménez didn’t leave for Nottingham Forest this summer, as they’ll never be offered a similar price for him again.
That’s according to former defender Khalid Boulahrouz, via Soccer News, who can at least understand why the striker turned down the move.
Giménez was linked with a move away from Feyenoord throughout the summer transfer window, and nobody pushed harder for him than Nottingham Forest.
They made several bids to try and convince the Dutch side into a sale, showing a willingness to spend big on the Mexican striker.
Feyenoord resisted for the most part, determined to push Nottingham Forest’s offers as high as possible as they sought out a big fee for their man.
It all came crashing down when Giménez made it clear he didn’t want to make the move, though, seemingly believing that he can secure a move to a bigger club in England or elsewhere.
Boulahrouz can understand that logic but believes Feyenoord will be left with regret that a deal was never done.
“From Feyenoord’s point of view, I would sell him immediately. They offered €33m,” he said.
“We’ve been through it before, with Jørgensen. They could get a lot of money for that and then he could be picked up for a piece of cake.
“Just to point out, you won’t get this money for him anymore. In the first six months he did great, then he scored less. Now he is still not the same, so the question is whether he is going to reach that level, and whether you are going to get this money for him anymore.
“From his point of view, I understand that he will stay at Feyenoord. He plays the Champions League there, a stage on which he can present himself. At Nottingham Forest he would have to face loads of defenders. He would not get many opportunities there to distinguish himself.”
