Napoli made a major mistake in not pushing hard to hire Roberto de Zerbi from Brighton and Hove Albion this summer.
That’s according to former Italian striker Christian Vieiri, who believes the Brighton boss was the logical successor to Luciano Spalletti and now Rudi Garcia.
De Zerbi has continued to win fans in England for the way he currently has the Seagulls performing, with a 3-0 win over Manchester United at the weekend their latest impressive performance.
That game was the newest addition to a series of big results for his side, all secured with a thrilling, entertaining brand of attacking football that is winning admirers from England and beyond.
Some of those are coming from Napoli, where a slightly disappointing start to the season under new manager Rudi Garcia, who replaced Spalletti in the summer after his surprise departure, has the Serie A champions dreaming of what might have been.
They were linked with a potential move for the Brighton boss throughout the summer and Inzaghi believes they should have gone through with it.
“There was only one coach that Napoli had to hire after Spalletti: that of Brighton, De Zerbi,” he said on Bobo TV.
“He plays football, he has the same philosophy. Garcia had nothing to do with it. He’s a phenomenal person who has his own idea of football, but if you can’t reach an agreement with Spalletti, the only coach who should have been hired was De Zerbi.”
