Spanish newspaper AS are talking up Tottenham Hotspur interest in Joan Garcia.
The goalkeeper has just achieved promotion with Espanyol and is thought to be attracting attention from various clubs around Europe.
AS name Tottenham specifically and insinuate the Premier League club have made an offer to the player. They state Spurs could have ‘already launched a specific proposal to the parakeet goalkeeper’, appearing to mean they’re trying to tempt him before speaking to Espanyol.
Indeed, it’s claimed Tottenham are currently ‘tempting him the most’.
There’s nothing too odd in any of that, but it’s what comes next which is rather eyebrow raising.
Getting a new first choice goalkeeper and replacing Guglielmo Vicario doesn’t seem like a priority right now for Spurs, but AS tell their audience: ‘They are forced to look for a lock for their goal, since they conceded a whopping 61 goals in 38 games.’
Only six Premier League teams conceded less, so it’s not exactly a wild statistic.
Anyway, Espanyol would want something close to Joan Garcia’s €25m release clause to do business. There’s every chance Spurs hold some interest but would have been looking for a second choice, and likely not at the fee quoted.
