LMA boss Howard Wilkinson has told the French media there is too much pressure being the England manager. The former Leeds United manger was appointed Technical Director for the FA when he left the West Yorkshire club in 1997.
Speaking to L’Equipe, the 72-year-old said the expectation that comes with being the England coach is more intense than anywhere else. Wilkinson believes since the Premier League became such a global competition this has made being the England manager even worse because of the focus it gets.
“The pressure and weight of expectation that goes with the England coach is more intense than elsewhere. A trend that has intensified in recent years, due to the growing success of the Premier League,” said the former Leeds United boss.
Wilkinson was the last English manager to win the league in the top flight of England when the Elland Road club lifted the title in 1992. With the Likes of Gordon Strachan, Gary McAllister, Gary Speed and David Batty, Leeds United saw off the challenge from Manchester United.
