Wolfsburg have pulled out of the race for Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg, with the competition and costs involved too much for them.

That’s according to Kicker, who report the German side had initially been optimistic about getting the Dutchman.

They explain that Wolfsburg had been chasing the Liverpool man for months and those in charge at the club thought they were in a good position to get him.

Their optimism grew and they were ‘hopeful’ of getting him when Liverpool made it clear they were ready to sell the defender.

All seemed to be going well but then Liverpool made it clear they want €20m. At that point, doubts grew about the ‘feasibility’ for Wolfsburg.

Their hope soon disappeared as the price rises started happening at all levels, with the player also increasing his salary expectations too.

The increasing price and the competition, with Bayer Leverkusen and Brentford also in the mix, ultimately led them to pull out of the race for the defender.

That’s led to some disappointment as they believed the Liverpool man offered the perfect profile of youth with experience. They now need to look elsewhere, particularly if they lose Maxence Lacroix, who Van den Berg would have replaced in the squad.
