Dutch clubs overlooking Sunderland summer signing Robin Roefs is ‘incomprehensible’ as he shines in the Premier League.
That’s according to Johan Derksen. He’s hit out at the likes of Ajax and PSV Eindhoven for overlooking the Sunderland star earlier in his career. His comments have been relayed by PSV Inside.
Roefs has been one of the star men for Sunderland this season after arriving in a €10m deal from NEC Nijmegen. The goalkeeper was one of the more discreet signings of a busy summer for Sunderland.
But he’s proven to be extreme value for money since. He’s quicky established himself as Sunderland’s number one and proven worthy of that status. He currently boasts a save percentage of 76%, with four clean sheets in 15 games and just 17 goals conceded.
He’s second in the charts behind David Raya for save percentage, second in total saves and in the top five for goals prevented as well. He’s also pushed his way into the Netherlands set up, where he is now seen as a direct competitor to Bart Verbruggen.
Questions are being raised about how he was missed in the Netherlands. Derksen thinks the likes of Ajax and PSV Eindhoven managed to let him leave for Sunderland.
“It’s incomprehensible that they overlooked Roefs in the Netherlands. He’s the weekly star for Sunderland, at the highest level. You could have just signed him,” he said.
An opportunity missed.
