West Ham United striker Niclas Füllkrug has been offered to German side VFL Wolfsburg, but a decision on him won’t be made until new director of football Pirmin Schwegler is in place.
That’s according to SportBILD. They report that Schwegler is set to replace Sebastian Schindzielorz within the next two weeks.
He has been given a mandate to initiate a ‘winter overhaul’ at the club. And one of the issues he will be ‘immediately confronted’ with is Füllkrug. He wants to leave West Ham in January to revive his hopes of making it to the World Cup.
He’s already been offered to Wolfsburg, and they have signalled an interest in him. But the deal is currently on hold. Schwegler will have an important say on whether Füllkrug is eventually signed from West Ham.
Füllkrug is the most pressing issue he will need to attend to when he arrives. Wolfsburg are interested in him, but there are caveats to that.
They cannot afford his salary, for one thing. Füllkrug earns around €8m at the London Stadium. They would need an agreement with West Ham with ‘shared payments’ during a loan deal.
But there are doubts about signing the striker anyway. Füllkrug would be the third older striker they’ve signed after Max Kruse and Kevin Behrens. Those two transfers didn’t go well, and now there’s worries about Füllkrug as well.
Schwegler has to weigh up the matter, particularly as the West Ham striker also has offers from Spain, Italy and England.
