AC Milan have been in contact with Tottenham Hotspur for years as they look to replicate the Tottenham Hotspur stadium in Milan.
That’s according to Calciomercato. The Italian website reports that Tottenham’s stadium is very much the reference point for what will be the new San Siro.
The report explains that Manica and Foster + Partners are working on the new stadium project. They’re looking to build a project ‘never before seen in Italy’.
That’s been supported by AC Milan’s Chief Commercial Officer, Maikel Oettle, who has promised “the ambition is to build one of the best stadiums in Europe”.
With that in mind, the Italian giants have ‘always looked’ to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium as a ‘reference point’. In fact, the owners of the two clubs have been ‘in dialogue for years’ regarding the stadium.
That’s seen them exchanging information for the club’s development in all aspects of management. Milan even used a trip to Tottenham in March 2023, in the Champions League, to their advantage.
On that occasion they revealed to Italian journalists present one of the models that would inspire the Rossoneri club in planning their new, futuristic stadium. Tottenham’s home was the clear inspiration.
One big idea they’ve taken is the transparent tunnel that Tottenham, Manchester City and others have pushed forward. They like that idea immensely, alongside selling hospitality packages and the ‘Tunnel Club’ schemes. They believe it’s a step towards ‘making football ever closer to the fans’.
There’s other elements too. Milan wants 71,500 seats and will take on a move oval shape. Again, another hint towards Tottenham. There will also be other features, such as a roof and internal shopping options.
It’s a big project, with years left to run. But Tottenham’s stadium is the inspiration, it’s success clearly spreading far beyond London’s borders.
