Earlier this month, we covered reports from Brazil which stated Cruzeiro are interested in signing Philippe Coutinho from Aston Villa.

With the club recently changing owners, it was said they’re after big reinforcements and could go after the midfielder, who may have a special motivation to return to his home country as he wants a comeback with the national team.

It turns out that as journalist Jorge Nicola now shares an update on the situation, he claims to have heard that this transfer is not happening.

The reporter spoke to a source from Cruzeiro’s board, who said it’s ‘impossible’ for them to sign Coutinho from Aston Villa.

The reason is simply his salary. It’s said the player currently receives £540k per month from the English club, and there’s no way he’s getting paid something close to that in Brazil.

Coutinho is currently having a loan spell at Al-Duhail SC, and is returning to Aston Villa this summer. Since he still has a contract with Unai Emery’s side running until 2026, the club and his agent need to find him a new solution soon.
