Bayer Leverkusen director of football Simon Rolfes has insisted he is ‘calm and optimistic’ regarding Xabi Alonso’s future, despite persistent links to Liverpool.
The Leverkusen director has been speaking to Saarbruecker Zeitung about the situation at this club and the ever-increasing speculation around their manager.
Alonso has found himself at the top of the Liverpool managerial wish-list this year following an impressive 18 months with Leverkusen.
He’s led the German side to the top of the Bundesliga this season playing an attractive, attacking brand of football that has not gone unnoticed.
He now appears to be the frontrunner to get the Liverpool job, who are hunting for Jurgen Klopp’s replacement, as well as at Bayern Munich, who are set to part ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season too.
Indeed, a report this week indicated that Liverpool have already been in touch with Alonso’s agents to discuss a move, something Leverkusen have been made aware of.
That same report claimed Alonso was leaning towards a return to Anfield, but it seems Rolfes is not overly concerned at this moment in time.
“I remain calm and optimistic,” he said when asked about Alonso.
“The most important thing with managers is that they feel comfortable and have the feeling that they are in the right place.
“Xabi knows what he has at the club. He has often said that. That’s how he works with his team and his coaching team every day.
“There are many conjunctures in the world. Not all of them have to materialise.”
