Manchester City’s João Cancelo has been on loan at Barcelona since the summer window and has impressed for the Catalan club this season.
The right-back has scored two goals and registered one assist from eight games, and his form has led to claims indicating that the La Liga side have plans to buy him next summer. They don’t have an option or obligation to make his stay permanent.
Mundo Deportivo have published a detailed interview with Barca sporting director Deco. Towards the end, he talked about the Manchester City owned player.
The Blaugrana have also signed the Portugal international’s compatriot, João Félix, on loan from Atlético Madrid.
When asked if it’s too early to know about the future of the two Joãos, Deco said: “The important thing is what they are contributing to the team.
“In the case of Cancelo, he is a player with experience, who has played at a high level in several teams for many years, he has quite a command of his position, Félix more of the same, somewhat younger, but with experience already at Benfica, Atlético and Chelsea. They are players who are contributing important things to the team but it is too early to talk about everything. At the moment they are helping us, which is what matters.”
The 29-year-old’s contract at Manchester City is until 2027 and has already expressed his desire to extend his stay at the Camp Nou.
On Monday, Sport stated Pep Guardiola’s side will make it very complicated for Barcelona to buy the defender after this season.
There have been suggestions that Barca could offer one of their players as part of the deal for Cancelo but an earlier claim from Sport had insisted that Manchester City will only be interested in signing a ‘real star’ if there’s an exchange operation.
