Newcastle United are yet to move on their stance regarding Odysseas Vlachodimos, despite the imminent arrival of Ewen Jaouen.
AS report that while Newcastle are going in a different direction in their goalkeeping department, they’re yet to accept Sevilla’s attempts to keep the Greek goalkeeper.
Newcastle United stance
Odysseas Vlachodimos has been on loan at Sevilla since the summer, joining the Spanish side for the season with opportunities at St James’ Park limited.
He’s proven to be Sevilla’s best signing of the season, establishing himself as number one and a key player for them across the campaign.
The Spanish side are determined to keep him, and he’s made it clear on more than one occasion that he’d love to stay. However, reports in Spain have made it clear that the finances are impossible for Sevilla at this moment in time.
AS back that up, explaining that Newcastle United want to recoup some of the €24m that they paid for the 32-year-old two years ago. While he has no place at the club, particularly with the imminent arrival of Jaouen, they won’t let him go cheaply.
Sevilla hopes
The problem for them is finding someone to pay it. Adding to that is the fact Vlachodimos has ‘privately expressed his desire’ to stay at Sevilla. He is ‘willing to do everything in his power’ to achieve it.
That translates into adjusting his salary, which had been shared with Newcastle United during his loan spell.
Sevilla see the operation as extremely complicated. The most they can hope for is a loan deal in which Newcastle cover the goalkeeper’s salary.
The feeling at the moment is that it’s not mission impossible but mission almost impossible. Vlachodimos’ efforts behind the scenes have moved the needle, but nowhere near enough.
The key step is convincing Newcastle to accept a deal which suits Sevilla more than themselves. The Magpies are yet to start moving in that direction.
