Tottenham Hotspur star Richarlison may not have missed out on a single call-up with the national team, but his current comeback from Brazil is getting big coverage from the local media.
The reason is that in the last time he represented the country, struggling with a goal drought, he revealed he was struggling mentally.
This week, we’ve seen reports about him doing therapy and getting prepared for Brazil’s upcoming games. And on Globo Esporte, journalist André Rizek shares a message of courage for the Tottenham player.
The pundit had a two-minute speech about Richarlison where he claims that the striker should realise he’s much loved at the national team, and should not encourage himself to be compared to the legends who’d worn that shirt before him.
“Look, Richarlison made a comparison with Ronaldo, the greatest centre-forward in the history of Brazilian football. Dear Richarlison, it won’t take you anywhere if you compare the greatest in history. Imagine if every musician thinks it should be the new Paul McCartney, every actress thinks she has to be the new Fernanda Montenegro.
“This will only cause frustration. No one will be happy like that, because it’s aiming for something unattainable. Therefore, Richarlison, if you accept an advice, I think you should try to be the best possible, and not the best impossible. It’s not your fault that Brazilian football didn’t produce more Ronaldos and Romários in this position. Thinking that you carry this weight is a burden that neither you nor any other player can carry.”
Richarlison hasn’t scored a goal for Brazil since the World Cup round-of-16 against South Korea. So that’s five games without a goal now.
He has a couple of goals for Tottenham this season, though, and will certainly be focused on scoring against Venezuela or Uruguay in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
