Tottenham’s Pedro Porro was recently called up to the Spanish national side following Dani Carvajal’s serious knee injury.

If not for the full-back’s form at Tottenham, the call-up would have never been possible and it’s perhaps something he deserves.

The Spaniard has started every Premier League game so far for Ange Postecoglou’s side, scoring once and really becoming the sort of player that the Australian loves to have in his team.

The ex-Sporting man has now been speaking the effort he puts in and his humility when it comes to his standing in the game.

MaisFutebol quote him as saying: “I always look at everything. I get up every morning to improve, I’m a player who always wants more and who takes care of the smallest detail. We don’t have to get stuck on what we do well.”

Reflecting further on his insistence to improve, the Spurs man said: “I’m a very sincere player, who tells things as they are. I still have a lot to improve, I’m 25 years old.

“I look at the careers of Jesús Navas and Dani Carvajal and say: “I’m rubbish”. It’s true!”

He said: “If people talk to me about the careers they had, I say: well, I’m on the right track. May I be like them one day, because they are my idols.”

Porro was also asked whether he has improved since joining Tottenham, and he agreed.

“I would say yes, since I was at Sporting. I’m much better and that’s important.

“The Premier [League] is very one-on-one and I worked on that well. The coach we have works on that especially and, thanks to the work, I improved.”

Even tactically, Porro has evolved as a player at Tottenham. He’s gone from being a full-back who was constantly bombing up and down the pitch to someone who inverts exactly how Postecoglou wants him to.

That has made him a valuable player in a side which will aspire to play in the Champions League next season.

The way things are going Porro will play a big role in their chances of making it there. His obsession with constantly getting better seems to be helping him a lot.
