Luizão is starting a new chapter in Brazil after his West Ham struggles, and has signed with second-tier side Criciúma. The 23-year-old centre-back joined the club on a deal that runs until the end of the campaign, with an option to extend.
“When they told me about Criciúma, I saw it as a great opportunity. The project of growth and the fight for promotion made me really want to be part of it,” he told Globo Esporte.
Luizão made his debut this week in a 4-1 win over Caravaggio in the State Championship. The defender said that experience helped him regain rhythm. “It had been two months since I last played an official match. I’m ready and I feel good.”
The move marks a major change for the young Brazilian, once a promising prospect at São Paulo. He joined West Ham in 2022 with high expectations but never featured for the first team, appearing instead for the U21s. In 2025, Luizão was loaned to Polish side Pogoń Szczecin, where playing time was again limited.
Looking to rebuild confidence with potential renewal
Returning to Brazil offers him a chance to rebuild confidence and consistency. Luizão also spoke about his early talks with coach Eduardo Baptista. “I’ve talked to him. Whatever is needed, I’ll be ready. I’ve played on the right side, even in a three-man line. I’ll give my best,” he said.
His contract includes clauses that allow an automatic renewal if both sides wish to continue, especially if Criciúma achieve promotion. “There are some clauses in place, but it’s a two-way street. If the club believes I can help next year, and I know the project they have here, no doubt we’ll stay together,” he added.
For Luizão, it’s a move that lowers the division but raises the purpose. After a difficult spell in Europe, he sees Criciúma as a chance to restart his career in familiar surroundings.
