It is no surprise that Tottenham are interested in Sporting Club de Portugal defender Pedro Porro as he is one of the best full backs in Europe.

That’s according to former Sporting captain Carlos Xavier, who believes Tottenham would be getting an elite level player in the Spaniard.

Porro has been linked with a move to Tottenham for several months, with the right full-back position continuing to be a problem one for Antonio Conte.

He is yet to hand summer signing Djed Spence his chance to impress and in the meantime the likes of Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty have struggled to prove they are the long-term solutions in the position.

It means the Italian coach is keen to add a player in the role and Porro’s name is reportedly at the top of his list.

He has been impressing for Sporting over the last two years, having initially joined on loan from Manchester City in August 2020 before making the move a permanent one for €8.5m in July of this year.

For most it won’t be long before he is on the move to a bigger club, and Xavier isn’t surprised that Tottenham are already showing interest.

“I’m not surprised that Tottenham and other clubs have their eye on him. He is a player that can do and makes a lot of difference whenever he plays,” Bancada report him saying.

“In Portugal he is for sure the best. Along with Nuno Santos, mind you. I’m sorry he’s not Portuguese. I’m really sorry.

“He is really a player with such intensity and intelligence that I believe he is one of the best in Europe, alongside João Cancelo and Trent Alexander-Arnold. He is really a player who has a margin of progression ahead of him.

“I have no doubt at all that he could be the future full-back for the Spanish national team.”
