Oh Sandro, what have you done? Newcastle United supporters will be well aware that the Italian football media love nothing more to link Sandro Tonali with a Serie A return.
That’s been the case ever since he arrived at the Magpies.
When a top Italian player leaves Serie A, there’s a struggle in Italy to believe that he could ever be truly happy. Because, well, wherever he is… it’s not Italy!
Therefore, there’s endless claims about a return, and the Newcastle United midfielder has seen more than his fair share. The gambling scandal he went through only encouraged everything further and even up until this week there’s been near-daily rumours.
Tonali is currently away with Italy’s national side. At a Thursday press conference he was asked about returning to Serie A. His reply, although nothing explosive, will provide fuel for a further thousand transfer rumours.
Newcastle United midfielder happy, but not ruling anything out
Gianliuca Di Marzio’s website quotes the 25-year-old as saying: “You can never know what will happen, I tell everyone it’s possible. I’m not closing the door on Italy; it’s my country. Maybe not now because I’ve found my balance at Newcastle. But the league is getting better and better, the level of the teams is rising.”

To the untrained ear that may sound like the Newcastle United player sitting on the fence. However, to the Italian rumour merchants it will sound like a come-and-get-me-plea.
With a contract lasting until 2028, Sandro Tonali is surely out of most Italian budgets.
The midfielder was also asked about Paul Scholes recently labelling him the best midfielder in the Premier League. To that, he said: “Every time you get compliments from strong former players it’s nice and you’re surprised, it’s always a nice feeling.”
