RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner has told Sky Deutschland that his decision to join Tottenham Hotspur on a loan deal in the winter market has already paid off.

Sky journalist Philipp Hinze carried out the interview and he took to X, formerly Twitter, to share more comments from the player.

The forward initially had a desire to succeed at the Bundesliga side, but Tottenham were successful in convincing him to join them.

Werner found it difficult to feature regularly for the German club as he was restricted to only two league starts this season.

He clocked in 386 minutes from 14 games in all competitions for Leipzig, and has already surpassed those minutes at the north London club in just five matches. It’s no surprise that he’s happy with his life at Tottenham.

On his move to Spurs, he said: “The fun has completely returned. I’ve changed a lot as a person, I’m much happier now. After just five games, you can tell that the transfer has paid off for me. But the season is still long. I want to build on my first performances. Just the fact that I’m playing in our stadium has already made the transfer worthwhile. It’s impressive.”

The transfer to the Premier League side saw Werner return to London, where he spent two years between 2020 and 2022, at Chelsea.

The Germany international has revealed he had initially considered the rivalry between the two English clubs, before agreeing to join Spurs.

“Of course, it’s a bit strange. In Germany, not everyone would cheer ‘Hurrah’ if you moved from Dortmund to Schalke. But especially in London, there are so many clubs, so the likelihood of playing for a rival upon returning is not low,” Werner explained.

“Now I play for Chelsea’s biggest rival. At the beginning, I thought about it – also because I was quite well-regarded by the fans. Nevertheless, the step back to the best league in the world was important for me. Back to a style of football that I really enjoyed back then. I couldn’t take that into consideration at the time.”
