Real Sociedad director of football Roberto Olabe has backed striker Willian Jose’s decision to join Wolverhampton Wanderers in the January transfer window.

Jose moved to Molineux on a loan deal until the end of the season last month, although that includes a purchase option which is likely to be triggered.

His move to Wolves ended a four and a half year stay at Real Sociedad, where he managed 62 goals and 15 assists in 170 games for the club after arriving from Maldonado.

It also brought an end to nearly 18 months of speculation about his future, with the striker having pushed for a move to Tottenham last January and been heavily linked with the same move throughout the summer transfer window.

On that occasion it was very much the striker who strived to make the deal happen, having chosen to put himself out of the team at one point in the hope of forcing things through.

That never happened but he got his wish this time around, with Olabe revealing it was the player who made the move to Wolves happen.

“I don’t believe too much in the winter period from a performance point of view, but from a project point of view,” Mundo Deportivo report him saying.

“They are usually peculiar circumstances. It is a good time to start projects. Carlos (Fernández) is a strategic project for the future.

“Willian Jose declared that it was the right time to look for a new challenge. Decisions are made over time.

“Willian wanted a new stimulus, a new adventure. I’m a fan of self-made decisions.”
