Matz Sels has been the first-choice goalkeeper for Nottingham Forest since joining them from RC Strasbourg in January 2024.
The Belgium international played a role in helping the Reds stay in the top division last season and has starred for them this season.
Sels kept 12 clean sheets and conceded 33 goals from 28 games for Nottingham Forest. He’s currently leading the charts for most clean sheets [11] in the Premier League this season.
The 32-year-old has continued to receive call-ups from the national team since joining the English club and will now again face competition from Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, according to Sudinfo.
Last month, Belgium appointed Rudi Garcia as Domenico Tedesco’s successor. Courtois hasn’t made an appearance for Belgium since June 2023 due to a fallout with the German.
The new manager has already stated the former Chelsea man will return to the national team squad. Play Sports in Belgium contacted the Nottingham Forest stopper to get his reaction on Courtois’s return.
Sels knows the situation is beyond his control and he can only focus on his own game at the Premier League club, and Sudinfo have relayed his comments.
“I’m concentrating on myself. Of course, I read a bit here and there about what’s being said, but these are things that don’t depend on me. What can I say? These are decisions that are made above my head,” he said.
“I think I’m doing a good job, so I can’t do more than that. It’s up to the coach to make a decision on that [No.1 goalkeeper for Belgium].”
