Earlier this month, Ken Sema, having scored two goals for Watford in a 3-2 win over West Brom, was interviewed after the game.
The chat quickly became viral as the 29-year-old overcame a stammer throughout, which he has had since he was six years old without really knowing why.
That’s according to L’Equipe, who spoke to the Watford player and his family about the reaction to the video, which has been entirely positive, with many praising the forward for his courage and inspiring many with similar speech impediments.
He said, joking: “After the interview, I became a star! I was already one, to be honest, but now I’m basically a superstar.”
This was clearly light-hearted, but the truth is, his brother, Maic, is incredibly proud of him, saying that he made the stammer seem ‘natural’, especially when taking into account the Swede wasn’t speaking in his first language.
Sema then added he was expecting to be interviewed since he had been named Man of the Match, but really wasn’t expecting the reaction, especially since it wasn’t the first time he had been interviewed.
He said: “It then went around the world. My phone started ringing and ringing. I was a bit shocked.”
The Watford player doesn’t even consider his stammer an impediment, as he has had for so long, as explained by his brother, who added: “He found it a bit weird because he didn’t think of his stammer like a handicap, and things got better as he grew up, at the same time as his confidence.”
