Rasmus Højlund scored his first Premier League goal of 2025 for Manchester United against Leicester City at the weekend.
The Red Devils picked up a 3-0 win over the Foxes right before the international break, which will see Højlund play for Denmark in the UEFA Nations League against Portugal.
The striker has remained an important part of the Danish side despite his struggles for Manchester United and he spoke to TipsBladet about his form.
He said: “It has been frustrating. That’s probably the right word to use. It has of course affected me a lot in terms of wanting to get on the scoreboard.
“I would worry more if it was the other way around and it didn’t work out for me. There’s not much else to say other than that it has of course been a period where I would have liked to have done better.”
The 22-year-old was also asked if he ever lost faith in his abilities during the difficult periods over the last few months.
He replied: “No, I don’t think so. I’ve proven before what I can do. Quite a few people have done it too. So it’s not that. The frustration is probably what has filled me the most, but there has also been something in terms of performance where it hasn’t been good enough either.”
The forward was asked whether he’s been paying attention to criticism from ex-Manchester United players and the media generally, and he denied that.
He said: “I don’t spend that much time on social media. I post occasionally, but otherwise I keep it away and spend my time with my girlfriend now, and my family – and I’m about to get a dog.”
Højlund had gone through a similar patch last season under Erik ten Hag, and came through that.
After that, he went on to score ten goals in the season. The Dane can certainly take heart and confidence from that.
The slump in form this season has also been down to a lack of service and if that changes now, there can be a big upturn in Højlund’s form.
And walking that new dog can provide a chance to clear his mind.
