Kasper Schmeichel joined Celtic on a free transfer last summer and has starred for Brendan Rodgers’ side, keeping 24 clean sheets and conceding 44 goals from 46 matches this season.

The goalkeeper’s performances for Celtic have helped him retain his place in the Denmark side.

Brian Riemer has been in charge of the national team since November’s fixtures and has included the Celtic player in his squad for this international break.

Denmark are set to face Portugal twice in the UEFA Nations League. Riemer believes the Celtic player could have a big role for these two matches and Tipsbladet have relayed his comments.

Schmeichel captained Denmark at the Euros last summer, but lost the armband to Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, currently on loan at Marseille from Tottenham Hotspur.

The midfielder led his country in the last three international breaks yet is unavailable for March’s fixtures due to injury. Riemer has to appoint a new captain and explains the Celtic star is most likely to get the armband against Portugal.

“It was important to me that it was the same person in both matches and someone who was on the field most of the time. Of course, there are more who could be,” he said.

“I’m 99.9% sure that this is him. I think this group has many leaders, and that everyone has a responsibility, so it makes the most sense for Kasper to be captain.

“I also think he has a lot to give to the young people. He is good at taking on that role, so in a group where there are also several new players, it makes good sense.”

This comes weeks after Riemer assured the Celtic player he will be the first-choice stopper for Denmark, after refusing to confirm it earlier.
