Only making his third appearance of the season because of a knee injury, Dedryck Boyata looked assured on Wednesday night in the centre of Celtic’s defence, and is hoping this run of games under Brendan Rodgers continues.
The 26-year-old is aiming for a spot in Roberto Martinez’s squad for the 2018 World Cup come the end of the season, and the fact the Belgium manager travelled to watch him play on Wednesday night suggests he could very well be in his thoughts.
With the next set of international games just around the corner, the Celtic centre-back doesn’t know if he’ll make the upcoming squad, but certainly feels like he’s on the right track
Speaking to DH after the game, he said: “It’s nice to see the manager travel to watch me. I’ll see if he picks me. It’s only my second full game. I felt good, even if it was a bit harder for the last 15 minutes.
“It’s never easy to come back from injury. I was still a bit worried, because I’m still not 100% fit, but it’s a good feeling”.
On top of playing 90 minutes, playing in his home country was a nice bonus for Boyata, who said he fought as much as possible to get as many tickets for his entourage so they could attend the game.
Describing himself as ‘happy’ to be able to play in front of his and his wife’s family, the Celtic defender also revealed he received a rather lengthy text from his dad who broke down his performance for him.
Hopefully it included a ‘well done’ in there somewhere.
